Description: Ever popular, boiled wool is a 100% merino wool knit that has been fulled. Fulling subjects the knit to hot steam and agitation (contrary to the name, the fabric is never boiled), producing fabric that most of us wish to avoid when we wash wools in cold water and air dry. Fulling creates a thick, durable, soft, and supple fabric used to make jackets and coats that shed rain and block wind. Boiled wool also doesn't need facings, interfacings, or linings. Coats and jacket that are shaped by seams and of simple design work best.
Minimum Recommended Sewing Skill: Beginner—boiled wool is very easy to work with. It doesn't ravel, so seams don't need to be finished. Edges are either left raw or finished with binding. To avoid unnecessary bulk, use lapped seams.
Preparing the Fabric: All the steam and agitation needed to create the fabric preshrunk if for you, but don't forget to preshrink all interfacing, linings, and notions as well. Failure to preshrink fusible interfacing can result in bubbles that are impossible to remove.
Layout/Cutting/Sewing: Use the "Without Nap" layout on a single or double layer— if the fabric is very thick cut one layer at a time.
Needle Size and Type: Use an 90/14 Universal/H needle.
Interfacing/Underlining: Not necessary.
Lining: Lining is not necessary.
Pressing: Use a steam iron on the wool setting.
