Nap Direction

When you run your hand over a napped fabric, the direction that feels smooth is "with the nap" while the other direction is "against the nap." Ready-to-wear garments are sewn with the nap running down from the top of the garment. This causes the nap to lay flat and the fabric wears better. However, if you'd like a richer, deeper color, you can cut your fabric so that the nap runs up from the bottom of the garment.

To help decide which direction you like best, hang your fabric around your neck like a scarf and look in the mirror. One side will be with the nap, the other against.

Remember, whichever direction you choose, be consistent!
